Former FBI director James Komei was charged on Thursday, which made him the first former precedent government official to be charged with the long -awaited investigation into Russian intervention in the 2016 elections.
Komei was accused of making a false statement and obstructing in a criminal case, days after the appearance of US President Donald Trump urging the prosecutor to prosecute him and other political enemies.
If convicted, Comei faces up to five years in prison.
Kumi said he was innocent and that he was confident in a judicial system for us.
He said in a video posted on Instagram: “My heart is broken to the Ministry of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I am innocent, so let’s get a trial and keep faith.”
Trump and his long -standing supporters have mocked Russia as a “trick” and “charming chase” despite the multiple government reviews that show that Moscow intervened on behalf of the Republic’s campaign.
The charge of making a false statement stems from Kumi’s certificate that he made to Congress Five years ago. The Republicans accused Kumei and his successor, Andrew Mcabi, of lying about leaks to the media.
The condemnation will require jury to find Kumi intentionally, with the intention of deception.
Trump and his allies interact
Soon after the announcement of the charges, Trump posted on the social media platform, and writes, “Justice in America!” He described Komei as “one of the worst human beings, and this country has ever been exposed” and said that “now at the beginning of being responsible for his crimes against our nation.”
Public Prosecutor Bam Bondi, a Savior of Trump, and the FBI director Cash Patel, a long -time audio critic for investigation in Russia, issued similar data in a joint press statement.
No one is above the law. Today, the indictment reflects the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to keep those who misuse the positions of power on the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.
“No one is above the law,” Bondi said.
While both the general report of the inspectors and the report of a private lawyer made a mistake in Kumi for some of his comments and actions during the proxy investigation in Russia, No one indicated that he committed a possible criminal act.
Battle said that the former US leadership is “federal law enforcement weapon.”
“Today, the FBI took another step in his promise to fully accountable,” he said in his statement.
The criminal case is likely to deepen fears that the Ministry of Justice during the Bondi era is under weapons to follow up on investigations, and now on public figures, the General President considers his political enemies.
The accusation of the major jury came after President Kumi mentioned the name in a social media post repeated Bondi for not moving quickly enough to connect criminal charges against his most prominent opponents, and wrote, “Justice must be offered, now.”

The case was submitted after the resignation of the chief prosecutor
The office that filed the case against Komei, the eastern province of Virginia, was thrown in the turmoil last week after the resignation of prosecutors Eric Separte under pressure to reach accusations against the other Trump goal, the New York Prosecutor Littia James, to achieve a mortgage fraud.
Trump Lindsey Halligan nominated the White House assistant, to be an American lawyer in the area. She was one of Trump’s personal lawyer and had no experience as a federal public prosecutor.
Halligan rushed to present the case to a major jury this week. Until Tuesday, the prosecutors had a case before the statute of limitations law had expired for a period of five years. The batch came to move forward even when the general prosecutors at the office expressed their concerns, in a memorandum, about following up on an indictment.
The prosecutions of lying to Congress are rare, but have not heard of them, and the defendants included Trump’s ally of Roger Stone as well as Michael Cohen, the former Trump lawyer.
Kumi, like all FBI managers before or since, was a registered Republican. Democratic President Barack Obama appointed him in this role, and Trump praised his 2016 presidential campaign due to the presence of “courage” to reopen an investigation into the use of Hillary Clinton’s competitor to the private email server when she was Minister of State.
But Trump and Komei had had a sharp relationship since the beginning of the first president’s term in 2017. Trump Kumi was launched as director of the FBI days after he publicly confirmed that the president was under investigation into his election campaign in Russia.
Kumi then appeared as a prominent critic of the president, describing him as “morally inappropriate” for positions.
