Glenn Close praised J.D. Vance’s family as “generous” during the filming of “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Actress Glenn Close told the hosts of “The View” on Wednesday that Vice President-elect J.D. Vance’s family was “generous” during the filming of the film adaptation of his memoir. “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Co-host Joy Behar asked Close about her Oscar-nominated role as Vance’s grandmother “Mamaw” in the film, which depicted his difficult upbringing in Ohio. Close said he and his family visited the set and Vance helped the young actor who played him as a boy in the film with the role.

“We all met family members. We all sat down with them individually, you know, one-on-one, and for me, with Mamaw, I would say, how she walked into the room, how she sat, how she smoked, how she laughed, how she changed Chemistry? “So, you know, the family was very generous.”

She then paused and said of Vance, “I don’t know what happened,” in an apparent reference to his conservative politics. Close is a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party.

Behar and co-host Sunny Hostin took some jabs at Vance during the discussion. Buoyed by the attention garnered by the book and film adaptation, Vance successfully ran for US Senate in Ohio in 2022 before being selected as Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 election.

“He had a completely different personality in those days than he does now,” Behar said. “A lot of people are like that. I think ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ is the name of that movie.”

“Well, now he’s talking about cat ladies who don’t have kids,” Houston said.

Reviews at the time claimed that the film failed to portray the working class. David Fair of Rolling Stone wrote: “The politically conservative, anti-welfare streak in the author’s writing seems to have been surgically removed,” while the Independent critic deemed it “an irresponsible display of death and despair.”

Addressing criticism in 2020, Close said That the Netflix film “was not produced with politics in mind.”
