Former Indian national cricket team player Mohammad Kaif was shocked when skipper Rohit Sharma dropped himself in the last match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He believes the combination was much needed in the Sydney Test.
Rohit Sharma has made a shocking decision ahead of the final match of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The captain of the India national cricket team dropped himself from the team in the last match and handed over the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah with Shubman Gill replacing him as batsman.
Rohit was not scoring runs in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy until the Sydney Test, amassing just 31 runs. However, dropping himself in the last match did not work and India lost the match by 6 wickets and lost the series 3-1.
I think Rohit should no longer play in Tests as he was needed badly in the Sydney-Mohammed Kaif Test match
Mohammad Kaif was not impressed with the way Rohit dropped himself, saying he should not be playing Tests now. He added that the India captain should have led from the front and helped his team tie the match. He said in a video clip he posted on his Twitter account:
“I think Rohit should no longer play in Tests because he was needed badly in the Sydney Test match. I said he should have played. It was the right call. He should have formed a partnership with Jaiswal and led (the team) to a 2-0 draw -2 (in the series). He (should have) taken the lead, and after the score was 2-2, he should have come back with honour, but he wasted it by not playing. He felt like a team man, so he called up the in-form batsman Shubman Gill and said: ‘I don’t I play”.
Mohammad Kaif pointed out that Rohit Sharma’s absence was felt when Jasprit Bumrah was injured. He added:
“You see, his absence was felt when Bumrah was injured in the second half. Rohit Sharma, as captain, would have been there (had he played). He was with the team, he knows Akash Deb, Siraj, Jadeja. Or Prasidh Krishna is playing, and Rohit was traveling With all of them, so, your chief captain, at the crucial time, no one was there, neither Bumrah nor Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma made the wrong decision to sit – Mohammad Kaif
Mohammad Kaif was not convinced by Virat Kohli leading the team in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He said the batsman has not been captain for the last few years and has no idea about the team. He confirmed:
‘The person who (Virat Kohli) has not led the team in the last few years is leading the team, and he asks Siraj and Jadeja, ‘What are you going to do?’ Tell me.’ Prasidh Krishna was playing his first game and his height was not right. Who supports the young bowlers as there was no pressure? So, I said Rohit Sharma made the wrong decision to withdraw.”
He should have played, it didn’t matter if he failed to score – Mohammad Kaif over Rohit Sharma
Kaif concluded by saying that regardless of the result, Rohit Sharma should have played the last match as he was in good form. He felt Rohit should have played a big role in Sydney, but he walked away. He explained:
“He had to play, it didn’t matter if he failed to score runs. Nobody was scoring runs. Not Kohli, Khawaja or Labuschagne (who was scoring big). Smith’s form came very late, there was no high level.” – Recording matches.
“Everyone was struggling to get runs. Rahul scored a run initially, but he also failed later, scoring 100 or 0 at times. So, no one scored runs. As a captain, there was a big role for Rohit Sharma in this Test just being there “There with the team he coached.”
Virat can come back
Bumrah is not the right person to captain Team India.
Gautam Gambhir is not the tactical coach India needs.
