In order to reduce import dependence, India is working on a list of 100 commodities where local production can be enhanced.
“We have identified about 100 products where we have huge imports, but we also have a local capacity. We look forward to reducing imports by increasing the local production of these goods in India,” said Trade Minister Sunil Bartawal on Monday.
He told reporters that imports that were identified include raw materials, intermediate commodities, ready -made goods in the sectors, including engineering products, chemicals, plastic materials and pharmaceutical preparations.
As part of the exercise, the Ministry of Commerce tries to assess local capacity and also consult with ministries, and also plans to discuss them with industry bodies. The goal is to produce the list in the public field to enable companies and businessmen to understand imports, local production facilities and plan production facilities.
Barthawal expressed his hope that the exercise will be completed by the end of next month.
Meanwhile, the sources also indicated that proposing the task of promoting export in an advanced stage and is likely to be much larger than it was initially suggested.
“The consultations have occurred between the pace, and they are likely to be transferred to the treasury soon. It will be more flexible and NIMBLER in treating exporters’ interests,” the source pointed out.
While the Federation’s budget 2025-26 has allocated 2,250 rupees for the task of promoting export, the sources said that the expenditures will be much larger because it will include a five-year period in conjunction with the recommendations of the Sixteenth Finance Committee from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031.
The task of promoting export is seen as a measure that would help exporters who face harsh American definitions by 50 % because they will provide facilities such as ease of credit for small, small and medium enterprises, warehouses abroad, and global brand initiatives.
