Newcastle United took a big step towards the Carabao Cup final on Tuesday evening, after beating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final.
Arsenal The team failed to create many chances in the first half at the Emirates Stadium, but came close to taking the lead through Gabriel Martinelli, the quick winger who raced towards goal and hit the post.
But Newcastle were the team to score first and it was the relentless Alexander Isak who scored for the fifth successive game in all competitions. The free-kick eventually found its way to the 25-year-old after touches from Sven Botman and Jacob Murphy, with the in-form sharpshooter converting it in style from close range.
The Magpies had a vital second just six minutes into the second half as Anthony Gordon reacted quickest to Isak’s blocked shot, sliding into the unguarded net after beating Jurian Timber to the ball.
Kai Havertz missed Arsenal’s best goal-scoring opportunity when he misfired a header from six yards, leaving Arsenal with the unenviable task of overturning a two-goal deficit during the early February second leg at St James’ Park.
