Argentine activist in the field of human rights, 106, dies

Argentine human rights activist Rosa Roceneplit died at the age of 106, says her organization.

She was an honorary head and a founding member of Plaza de Mayo, a group that looked for stolen children during the military dictatorship in Argentina between 1976 and 1983.

“We only have words of gratitude for her dedication … and the love that I looked for for grandchildren and girls to the end,” the campaign group said in a statement.

About 30,000 people were killed or forcibly disappeared during the “dirty war” of Argentina. Children of detained opposition activists have been seized and adopted.

Rosa Roceneplit was born in 1919 in Moisis Phil, a town of Jewish immigrants in central Argentina.

She worked as a obstetrician and moved to Buenos Aires in 1949, when she got married in 1951.

After the military coup in March 1976, the Military Council to eliminate the opposition moved. Tens of thousands of activists were extracted in raids and held in the centers of detention and torture of secrecy.

The name Guilllermo Francisco Gómez was named by adopted parents: Francisco Gómez and Teodora Jofre.

Roisinblit was in the courtroom in 2016, when Gomez was imprisoned for life due to the kidnapping of the boy. Jofre was imprisoned separately for three years.

Later that year, two men – a former head of the Air Force, a former reading officer – were sentenced to 25 years in prison for kidnapping and torture in Patricia and Jose. Among the hundreds of soldiers and leaders were a trial due to human rights violations.

At the age of 96, Roisinblit came to trial with Guilllermo and Mariana.

A year later, the news agency told AFP: “This wound never heals … but I say I stop? No, I will never stop.”

An estimated 140 children were collected with their biological parents through the work of organizations such as the Jeddah de Mayo.

Hundreds are still missing.

“We are fighting, but the heroes are our children who wore against a fierce dictatorship and made their lives for a better country,” said Roiceblit.

Guillermo is a human rights lawyer and works with the grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, and continues his grandmother’s legacy.

In a post on Saturday, he said: “My grandmother, and outside the sadness that I feel, died, it is comfortable to think that after 46 years I did not reunite with my mother and with her great love, my grandmother Benjamin.”
