A rebel group that controls the area late Monday said that the landslides eliminated a village in the western Darfur region of Sudan, killing an estimated 1,000 people in one of the most bloody natural disasters in the history of the modern African country.
The Sudan Liberation Movement said in a statement that the tragedy took place on Sunday in the village of Tarasin in the Mount Maria Mountains in central Darfur, days after heavy rains.
“Initial information indicates the death of all the residents of the village, which is estimated at more than 1,000 people. Only one person survived,” the statement said.

Relief groups imposed by violence
The tragedy came as a destroyed civil war that invaded Sudan after tensions between the military forces and the semi -military support forces (RSF) exploded in an open fighting in April 2023 in the capital, Khurroum, and elsewhere in the country.
Most of the Darfur region, afflicted by the conflict, has become unconnected to the United Nations and aid groups, given the restrictions of the unemployed and fighting between the Sudan army and RSF.
Doctors of the Relief Group has warned that many societies in Darfur, including the Mary Mountains, were cut more than two years after war and isolation, describing these areas as a “black hole” in the humanitarian response of Sudan.
He said in a report in July that people in these societies “are deprived of sufficient assistance and vibrated by relief representatives despite the terrible, permanent conditions.”

The Marge Mountains are a rugged volcanic chain of 160 km southwest of Al -Fashr, and it is a center for fighting between the army and RSF. The region has turned into a center for displaced families who run away from the fighting in and around El Fasher.
Many have already forced their homes
The conflict in Sudan killed more than 40,000 people, forced more than 14 million people to flee their homes and let some families eat grass in a desperate attempt to survive when famine swept parts of the country.
It has been characterized by atrocities, including killing and rape of ethnic motives, according to the United Nations and rights groups. The International Criminal Court said it was investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The World Heritage site, and the mountain range is famous for its low temperature and rainfall higher than the surrounding areas, according to UNICEF. It is located more than 900 km west of the capital, Khartoum.
