The United Nations says that Sudan’s landslide kills hundreds

The United Nations official told the BBC that the landslide had killed at least 370 people in the remote Maraa mountains in western Sudan.

Antoine Gerrard, the deputy of the United Nations Human Coordinator for Sudan, said it was difficult to assess the size of the accident or the exact death toll as it was very difficult to reach the area.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, the armed group that controls the affected area, had said earlier that 1000 died.

The group said in a statement that the heavy rains caused the ground collapse on Sunday, which left only one survivor and “went” in a large part of the village of Tarasin.

The movement of humanitarian assistance from the United Nations and other regional and international organizations appealed to.

Gerard said that obtaining aid to the area will quickly be difficult.

“We do not have helicopters, everything goes in vehicles on very rugged roads. It takes time and it is the rainy season – sometimes we have to wait hours, and perhaps a day or two to cross Wadi … Bring the trucks with goods will be a challenge.”

Many residents of the northern state of Darfur resorted to the Marra Mountains area, after the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF (RSF) that forced them from their homes.

The ruler of Darfur described the alignment of an army, Mini Miniwi, as a “human tragedy”.

“We appeal to international humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and provide support and assistance at this critical moment, because the tragedy is greater than our people can bear on their own,” he said in a statement quoted by Agence France -Presse.

The photos show two grooves on the side of a mountain converging at a lower level as it was the village of Tarasin.

The civil war that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and RSF fell on the country to famine and led to the accusations of genocide in the West Darfur region.

The estimates of the number of deaths from the civil war are very different, but a US official last year had valued up to 150,000 people who have been killed since hostilities began in 2023. About 12 million homes have escaped.

The Sudan Liberation/Army factions, which controlled the area where the landslide occurred, pledged to fight alongside the Sudanese army against RSF.

Many Darfuris believe that RSF and allied militias have launched a war aimed at converting ethnically mixed area into a field of Arab rule.
