A huge tuna sold for $1.3 million at an auction in Japan

A company spent seven figures to acquire a huge tuna during an auction held at a Japanese fish market in Tokyo over the weekend.

The more than 600-pound tuna went to Onodera Group, a Japanese company that operates sushi restaurants and companies in other sectors, according to a translated press release.

An impressive bid of $1.3 million (207 million yen) landed the company Huge bluefin tuna.

The seven-figure sale was part of the first Toyosu market tuna auction of 2025, Onodera Group said in the press release. It was held on Sunday.

The Japan National Tourism Organization described Toyosu Market as “the largest fish market in the world.” People sell tuna and other seafood there, as well as fruits and vegetables.

Onodera’s group said it had recorded the first tuna for five consecutive years. It also did so in 2018, according to the company’s press release.

Over the past 26 years, the market has seen only one other New Year’s Eve tuna fetch a price higher than this year’s price of $1.3 million. Agence France-Presse reported. This fish, sold in 2019, reportedly cost 333.6 million yen.

“The first tuna is meant to bring good luck,” Shinji Nagao of Onodera said over the weekend, according to AFP. “Our wish is that people eat this and have a wonderful year.”
