Pike’s novel is not the only change. They also added space butterfly, which first appeared in “What is Starfleet?” , The seventh episode of the third season. It is called Dragon Jikaru, and the first that the crew faced killed himself to avoid using it as a weapon.
Below is a close snapshot of the new Dragon Jikaru.

The show was eating a lot of heat for a tendency to make joke rings. Of the 8 episodes released in the third season, this is the third episode that played with comedy. If you are Volcan, this is 37.5 % of all available episodes. Whether these rings are good or not, this unbalanced percentage appears to be illogical.
