“The balanced approach to Digital Bharat”: The minister highlights the banning of harmful money games online, enhancing electronic sports

On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha team approved the strengthening and regulation of the online games bill, 2025, which was presented by the Federation Minister Ashwini Fishnaw. Legislation seeks to impose a comprehensive ban on online money -based games while promoting electronic sports and social games via the Internet as safe and constructive ways of youth participation.

The draft law defines online money games that they are asking players to deposit money in the hope of winning cash or other rewards. Such games are described as “harmful”, with provisions to prevent advertisements and prevent banks and financial institutions from addressing relevant transactions. The proposed amendments from the opposition were rejected during the discussion.

Minister Fishnawa moved to the social media platform X to explain the logical basis behind the legislation. He explained a three -part classification on the Internet: online sports, online and online money games. According to the minister, the draft law adopts a “balanced approach” – which enhances healthy games with the ban of those who endanger players and families.

“Online games are an important sector of digital bharat,” Tweet Vaishnaw. “While electronic sports depend on training, they are often played between teams, social games are fun and educational. On the other hand, online money games cause addiction, harmful, and often lead to financial ruin.”

Promote electronic sports and social games

The bill provides legal recognition of electronic sports, which, similar to traditional sport such as cricket or football, includes strategy, reactions and teamwork. The government -led plans and programs also propose to support the growth of the electronic sports sector.

Social games are recognized online, such as Think Angry Birds, paper games, and informal brain games, as a safe way to interact and learn. The government said it would support games and creators – part of the creators’ economy and software growth in India

Ban on online money games

In contrast, money games are banned online. The draft law cites the negative impact on youth and families, including addiction, fraud, credit card debts, and in extreme cases, suicide cases. It also suspends concerns about money laundering, terrorist financing, and misleading celebrities that add wrong legitimacy to these platforms.

The legislation distinguishes between victims and facilitators. VaishNaw wrote that the players will not be punished, but service providers, advertisers and payment platforms will face strict penalties.

Government logical basis

By highlighting the social necessity, Vaishnaw noted that families’ crores were negatively affected by the online money, as middle -class savings were eliminated. “When it comes to choosing between the well -being of society and government revenues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi G has always chosen the families of the middle class,” the minister stressed.

Earlier from Rajia Sebha, Fishnaw said: “The legislation aims to support two -thirds of the online gaming sector with an accuracy of the online money games, which has become a great concern for society, especially among the youth of the middle class.”

“These games lead to addiction and wiping family savings. Estimates indicate that 45 rupees were affected, as they lost more than 20 thousand rupees of money that was acquired by the middle -class families from the middle class,” PTI said.
