10 retired shirt numbers from English clubs

Retirement number in football is a relatively rare thing compared to other sports, but there were cases in which multiple clubs were devoted to specific numbers for players in the past.

Liverpool has become the latest team to do so, after the very sad news about Dugo Jotapassage. The Portuguese striker wore the No. 20 shirt in Anfield and will be another to do so for Reds after he honored him in Anfield by retirement of the shirt.

Other clubs have immortalized their former players by hanging the shirt numbers.

Jude Bellingham

Birmingham City – Shirt No. 22

Birmingham City knew that they had talent at their hands when they decided to retire the Jude Bellingham shirt No. 22 when Saint Andrew left in 2020.

Bellingham, who is now known to be one of the world’s best midfielders, was only 17 years old when Birmingham exchanged Borussia Dortmund.

Some saw it as an interesting decision by the blues, but over time, you can see why they decided to do this.

Bobby Moore

West Ham – Shirt No. 6

The only English man to raise the World Cup, Bobby Moore is the legend of three black and at the club level, by West Ham.

The central back has appeared more than 600 games for the hammers over 16 years, helping the iron to win the FA Cup and the European FA Cup.

Moore was only 51 years old when he died in 1993, and after 15 years, West Ham decided to retire his 6 -year -old shirt in honor of his oldest defender.

West Ham – Shirt No. 38

Besides the number 6 shirt of More, West Ham took the decision to hang the No. 38 shirt on the anniversary of the Dylan tomb.

The Australian striker was presented through the Hammers’ Academy and showed a great appearance in The Irons in 2012 after overcoming testicular cancer a few months ago. However, tragicly, Tombides cancer returned and spread to his liver, with the death of the young man in April 2014.

Marc-Vivien Foe

Manchester City – Shirt No. 23

Milwal – Shirt No. 20

In the summer of 2024 at the age of only 26 years, Milole Matiga Sarkic goalkeeper died suddenly from heart failure.

Sarkic made a permanent move to Montenegro in 2023 of the wolves after loan bouts in Shuzbury Town, Birmingham City and Stoke City.
