Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski will fly on Washington, DC, on Monday, under severe pressure in the United States to agree to a quick end to the Russian war in his country, but it is determined to defend the interests of Kiev-without provoking a second office from the Oval Office with US President Donald Trump.
Trump Zelinski called to the White House after the red carpet of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the enemy of the Arch of Kiev, at the summit of Ancorag, Alaska, on Friday, was shocked by many in Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands have died since the invasion of Russia 2022.
Alaska’s talks failed to produce the ceasefire that Trump requested, and the American leader said on Saturday that he now wants an integrated peace agreement and that Kiev should accept it because “Russia is very great, and they are not.”
The explicit speech throws the weight of expectations again to Zelinski, and put him in a risk fraught position as he returns to Washington for the first time since his talks with Trump at the Oval Office in Hadda in February.
The US President led to Zelenskyy in front of the global media at the time, saying that the leader of Ukraine had not “kept cards” in negotiations and that what he described as KYIV racists risks the launch of World War III.
Trump now comes to seek a quick deal despite intense diplomacy by European allies and Ukraine to persuade the US President that the ceasefire should come first and not once a settlement is reached – as the Kremlin sought.
The New York Times, two of the two senior European officials, reported on Saturday that European leaders were invited to attend a meeting on Monday between Trump and Zellinski. Reuters could not confirm the report immediately.
The Ukrainian leader said that Trump briefed Zelinski on his talks with Putin during a call on Saturday that lasted for more than an hour and a half. He added that they joined an hour later by European officials and NATO.
“The impression is that he wants a quick deal at any cost,” a source familiar with the conversation told Reuters.
US President Donald Trump said there is a very good opportunity to “get there” in a deal to end the war in Ukraine after saying with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin also put the idea of going to Trump to Moscow to attend a follow -up meeting.
The source said that Trump sought to persuade Zelinski to agree to the idea of the deal in which the forces are withdrawn from the partially occupied eastern Donetsk region and which Russian forces are trying to capture for years.
Zelenskyy replied that this is not possible, the source said.
Kyiv has publicly rejected the idea of withdrawing from the internationally recognized Ukrainian lands that it controls it as part of any deal. Ukrainian officials say the Donetsk region is a fortress that hinders the Russian progress in the country.
Olksander Merizko, head of the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Committee, told Reuters on the phone that Trump’s focus on a deal instead of stopping shooting at major risks on Ukraine.
“From the point of view of Putin, the peace agreement means many dangerous things – Ukraine does not join NATO, and its absurdity to remove the disposal of fading, Russian language and the Russian Church,” he said.
Merizko said any such deal could be a political explosive inside Ukraine, adding that he was concerned that Putin’s international isolating has ended.
Security guarantees
Avoiding the frequency of the February Oval Office is necessary for Zelinski to maintain the relationship of Ukraine to the United States, which still provides military assistance and involved in intelligence.
For Ukraine, strong security guarantees to prevent any future Russian invasion lies in the basis of any serious peace settlement.
Two sources familiar with the matter said that during their call on Saturday, Trump and European leaders discussed possible security guarantees for Ukraine, which will be outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but it is similar to Article 5 of the Alliance.
Nato, who is seeking Kiev – although Trump has made it clear that he would not happen soon – any attack on one of his 32 members is considered an attack on everything that is said in Article 5.
One of the exporters, who asked not to disclose his identity to discuss sensitive matters, said that European leaders were looking for clarity about our role that this guarantee would include, but there have been no details yet.
In a clear effort to support the hand of Zelinski before Trump, France, the United Kingdom and Germany will meet, she will participate in hosting a video call on Sunday afternoon from the “coalition” of desires that can, which can help, in one way or another, monitor any deal and support it to end the fighting.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly said that a triple meeting with Russian leaders and the United States is very important to find a way to end the war on a large scale that Russia launched three and a half years ago.
This week, Trump expressed the idea of such a meeting, saying that it could happen if his bilateral conversations in Alaska succeeded with Putin.
“Ukraine confirms that the main issues can be discussed at the leadership level, and that triple coordination is suitable for this,” Zelinski wrote on social media on Saturday.
Ukrainian President Foludmir Zelinski met British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer in London on Thursday. This comes one day before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss the ceasefire in Ukraine.
Trump puts on Zelenskyy and Europe
Trump said in Alaska that “there is no deal until there is a deal,” after Putin claimed that the two leaders had come out of “understanding” on Ukraine and warned Europe not to “emerging progress.”
During an interview with Fox News before returning to Washington, Trump insisted that moving forward might be in Zelenskyy “to accomplish it”, but he said that there will also be some participation from European countries.
In their statement after speaking to Trump, the main European leaders said they were ready to work with Trump and Zelinski towards a “triple summit with European support.”
“Ukraine must have iron security guarantees,” said a statement from the French, German, Italian, British, Finish, Polish and European leaders, and it welcomed us with our willingness to provide them. “It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory,” they said. “The international borders should not be changed by force.”
Emmanuel Chaz, France 24 correspondent in Kiev, says that Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski hopes that US President Donald Trump will be “adequate pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Alaska summit.
“The harsh truth is that Russia has no intention to end this war anytime,” Kaja Callas, head of the European Union’s foreign policy, said, noting that Moscow launched new attacks on Ukraine even with the confrontation of delegations.
“Putin continues to withdraw negotiations and hopes to escape from it.” He left Ancorag without making any obligations to end the killing, “she said.
Ukrainian and Russian forces fight along a front line of 1000 km. Since the spring, Russian forces have accelerated their gains, and have acquired most of the lands since the opening stages of the war.
Putin has separated from international isolation.
Russian officials and the media hit a large positive tone after Friday’s summit, as some described it as a symbolic end to isolating Putin in the West.
Former President Dmitry Medvedev, Vice -President of the Russian Security Council, praised the summit as a boom in restoring a high -level dialogue between Moscow and Washington, describing the talks as “calm, without warning and threats.”
“Vladimir Putin came to the Alaska summit with the main goal of stopping any pressure on Russia to end the war,” said Nile Melfin, director of international security at the Royal United Institute in London. “The result of the summit will be an important task.”
Lori Presto, who was a British ambassador to Russia from 2016 to 2016, said that Putin “separated from international isolation” and returned on the world stage as one of two international leaders, and “was not in the least challenge” by Trump, who was also ignoring an arrest warrant issued by Putin.
“Unless Mr. Putin is completely convinced that he could not win militarily, the fighting will not stop,” Presto told Associated Press. “This is the large ready -made meals from the peak of the marina.”
