US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Alaska next Friday To discuss the future of the war in Ukraine.

Trump announced a August 15 meeting on social media and was later confirmed by a Kremlin spokesman, who said the site was “completely logical” given its relative proximity to Alaska to Russia.

The spokesman added that Trump was invited to Russia for a possible second summit.

There was no immediate reaction from Ukraine.

The announcement of the meeting came just hours after Trump’s indication that Ukraine may have to waive the lands to end the war, which started to invade Russia’s full invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

“You are looking at the lands that have gone through for three and a half years, the death of many Russians. Many Ukrainians died,” Trump said at the White House on Friday.

“It is very complicated. We’ll go back, and we will get some switch. There will be some swap of areas, to improve the two.”

The US President did not provide further details about the form of this proposal.

but, American BBC partner CBS NewsQuoting sources familiar with the discussions, it indicates that the White House is trying to influence European leaders to accept an agreement that would include Russia taking the entire Dunpas region in eastern Ukraine and preserving the Crimea.

It will be abandoned by the regions of Jacon and Zaburisvia, which are partly occupied, as part of the proposed agreement, according to CBS reports.

Earlier on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Putin suggested a similar arrangement to Trump Steve Wittouf during a recent meeting in Moscow.

It is still unclear whether the Ukrainian and European allies will agree to such a deal, given that Ukrainian President Voludmir Zelinsky and Putin are still far from peace conditions.

Zelensky de rejected any preconditions for regional concessions.

A senior White House official told CBS that planning for next Friday was still liquid, and Zelinski could have participated in some capabilities.

Moscow has failed to achieve a decisive breakthrough in its comprehensive invasion, but it occupies about 20 % of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian attacks did not push the Russian forces.

Three rounds of direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul failed to approach the war from the end, and Kiev and its allies see peace conditions in Moscow for peace.

Russian demands include that Ukraine becomes a neutral country, which greatly reduces military and abandoning its aspirations in NATO, as well as lifting Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

Moscow also wants to withdraw its army from the four regions that Russia is partially occupied in southeastern Ukraine, and its soldiers infiltrate.

However, Trump insisted on Friday that the United States “shot” a triple peace agreement between the two countries.

He told reporters: “European leaders want to see peace and President Putin, as I think, he wants to see peace, and Zelinsky wants to see peace,” he told reporters.

“President Zelinski must get everything he needs, because he will have to prepare to sign something and I think he is working hard to accomplish this,” Trump said.

Last month, Trump confessed to BBC After all previous Witkoff visits, Putin had disappointed after the conversations initially led to optimism.

He crucified his position on the Kremlin in recent weeks, and imposed a deadline on Friday on Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face more severe sanctions.

But as the deadline approached, the economic threat quickly overwhelmed Trump and Putin’s plans to meet personally to discuss a possible peace agreement.

There was no announcement of more sanctions on Russia from the White House on Friday.

Trump and Putin spoke over the phone in February in the first direct exchange of the leaders of the two countries since Russia has widely invaded.

The last time he met an American president, Putin was in 2021, when Joe Biden met the Russian president at a summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

Witness: Trump says there is a “good possibility” for a summit with Putin and Zellinski “very soon.”
