Azerbaijan and Armenia signing the peace agreement at the White House summit

Azerbaijan and Armenia leaders signed an agreement aimed at ending contracts from the conflict, as President Donald Trump hosted them at the White House on Friday.

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pashinian shook hands after the American President described the event as “historic”.

“It has been a long time,” Trump said of the agreement that will reopen some major transportation roads between countries and increase the influence of the United States in the region.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought against Nagorno Karabakh, an Armenian pocket in Azerbaijan, in the 1980s and 1990s, and violence has erupted in the years since.

On Friday, Trump said that Armenia and Azerbaijan promised to stop all the fighting “forever” in addition to opening relations between travel, business and diplomacy.

Aliyev said: “We are establishing today peace in the Caucasus.” “We have lost several years of preoccupation with wars, occupation and bloodshed.”

Pashinian described the signature as an “important teacher” in relations between the two countries.

“Thirty -five years have fought, and now they are friends and they will be friends for a long time,” Trump said at this event.

The White House said, as part of the deal, the United States will also help build a main transit corridor that will be named the Trump Road for Peace and International Fluation.

The road will connect Azerbaijan and excite the independent Nakhshivan, which is separated by the Armenian lands. In the past, Aliyev called for Armenia to give his country a railway corridor for Khenshvan.

Armenia wanted to control the road, and threatened the leader of the Azerbaijani in the past to take the corridor by force. The case stopped and previous peace negotiations stopped.

Both leaders Trump and his team praised throughout the meeting: “President Trump has, in six months, a miracle.”

Trump said he also signed a bilateral agreement with both countries to expand energy and technology.

The US President sought to conclude peace deals between many warring countries during his second term.

On Friday, the summit also indicates the expansion of its influence in the region at the expense of Russia. For more than a century, the Kremlin played the role of power and peace broker there.

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin himself has been the main mediator in the conflict. Putin designed the last agreement signed by Aliyev and Bashinian.

With Trump now collecting both countries together, Putin is largely marginalized. Moscow worked to include its interests in peace talks, but the two sides abandoned these proposals in favor of the American solution.

The announcement came on Friday shortly before Trump announced that he would meet Putin for talks in Alaska next week.
