At 92 years old, Edward Thorpe is still a force of nature, offering timeless advice on longevity. Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath, reflecting on his health concerns, described Thorpe’s insights as “brilliant,” underscoring their importance in a fast-paced, high-stress world.
Thorpe, the legendary mathematician and investor, divided longevity into two main strategies: defense and attack. “Defense means reducing risks that could shorten your life – whether it’s cardiovascular disease or a sudden accident. It’s about eliminating weak links,” he explains.
This includes getting regular checkups, eating a balanced diet, and treating potential health problems before they get worse.
When it comes to attacking, Thorpe says exercise is the “silver bullet.” “Moderate exercise can add years to your life and more to your health, keeping you stronger and more active for longer,” he adds.
Kamath’s endorsement of Thorpe’s philosophy comes from his personal experience. In 2024, Kamath suffered a mild stroke, which he discussed publicly on social media. “Dad’s death, lack of sleep, exhaustion, dehydration, exhaustion – any of these could be possible causes,” he wrote at the time.
Kamath’s recovery journey has included regaining focus and physical function, with his doctor stressing the importance of knowing when to “change course a little”.
Kamath has long championed the importance of health, both personally and professionally. In 2022, he introduced a fitness challenge at Zerodha, offering a monthly salary bonus to employees who achieved 90% fitness goals over the course of the year.
“At least 350 active calories per day, in any form,” Kamath said, highlighting the need for daily movement in an increasingly sedentary work environment.
For Kamat, Thorpe’s advice resonates deeply. Both emphasize proactive health measures and balancing activity with rest to maintain long-term health.
