Should have been trademarked ‘Ye sab doglapan hai’: Netizens after Ashneer Grover trademarks his name

Former Shark Tank India judge Ashneer Grover, known for his mercurial behavior on the show, is in the news after he trademarked his name. This development was confirmed by Delhi High Court lawyer Aditi Tuteja, who specializes in intellectual property rights and trademarks.

Tuteja shared the update along with the same certificate in a post on LinkedIn. She said that the name Grover has been successfully registered as an intellectual property under Class 41 of the Trademarks Act 1999.

In her post, she stated that the brand “not only strengthens its brand identity, but also expands its business reach beyond entertainment.”

She further pointed out that branding is a complex issue in India. However, Tuteja added: “The Trade Marks Act 1999 does not explicitly address it, but celebrities can take advantage of existing laws and court rulings to protect their name and image.”

The Delhi High Court lawyer also stated that many celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Kajol, Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan have successfully registered their names as trademarks.

Soon after this announcement, netizens were quick to snap photos of Grover. Some even wondered if this meant that no one else could use the name Ashner.

“Now Sony TV has to pay royalties for using Ashneer sir’s name and tagging him in YouTube videos to get views. Nice move sir. Naam ke paise bhi milne chahiye,” another user joked.

A third user commented, “Yahi pakwas karte raho.” “To all future Grover parents, don’t name your kids Ashnir anymore (sic),” a fourth user wrote.

Another user asked: “This sounds crazy. Does this mean that any other person on this earth with the name ‘Ashneer Grover’ will not be able to make a living in these mentioned fields. If this is true, then it is really ridiculous.”
