Talking about money is difficult, and your boss asks more of it Even the most difficult. But once you take enough time to search Negotiation for a higher salary.
Kathryn Valentine, CEO of Worthmore Strategies, who helped hundreds of customers successfully negotiate compensation packages, says that the first conversation with your business president or your benefits does not matter how much you are ready, although the first conversation with your boss or your benefits will not be concluded with a sealed deal, including all that you hope for, says Kathryn Valentine, CEO of Worthmore Strategies, who helped hundreds of customers successfully negotiate compensation packages.
The process is likely to require several weeks of meetings, follow -up and documents.
Valentin says that the time it takes to negotiate your compensation should not worry you, though. “Some people think about this as this conversation for one time I must do, and it is very stressful, like buying a house,” she says. “He does not buy a house.”
Instead, negotiation is a continuous process that will appear several times throughout your career. And like any skill, you can improve over time.
Here is what Valentine’s Day advises so that you can patience – and get what you seek – during the negotiation process.
Get the right time
Valentin says that the annual review may feel that you are the normal time to ask for an increase, but by that time, most companies have already set their annual budget.
She says that the start of the conversation in the mid -year release process can be more effective, because your boss can turn compensation into plans for the next year. In addition, you can feel your annual review as celebrating if it does not include a dangerous conversation for salaries.
Do not miss: The final guide to negotiate a higher salary
Valentin says that choosing the appropriate time to negotiate is not only about the company’s calendar. It is also related to opening the dialogue at a time when your boss is likely to be open and acceptable – not when they deal with a crisis at home or when the company’s disaster is in full swing.
After assuming new responsibilities or completing a large company winning, prepare the meeting just as you arrange any other arrival registration with your manager, says Valentin. Make sure to clarify in advance that you want to discuss your compensation package. Before sitting, check that they are still in a good place to start the conversation, she says.
Take the long distances
At the first meeting to negotiate another increase or changes to your compensation, your goal must be “to succeed in being successful,” says Valentin – not reaching an agreement.
After you started the initial conversation about your target salary or any other aspects of your compensation that you want to improve, your boss is likely to tell you that, at least, they need to consult with the highest or think about changes before making any major agreements. This does not mean that you failed, as Valentin says – this means only that it is time to practice some patience, and prepare for follow -up.
Before you leave the meeting, make sure to establish one time for tourists for both of you, says Valentin.
After that, in an e -mail to follow up, confirm the timing of that second discussion and attach your notes from the first one, and therefore the lack of documentation does not delay the process further, as you say.
Ultimately, the successful negotiations are cooperative, so you need to be patient while the other party blocks numbers and is considered viable options, says Valentin.
