Thousands of tons of toxic waste lies in one of the most important underground water reserves in Europe in the town of Whitchim in the Alzas region of France. The French authorities decided in June to permanently close the waste from the former Stocamine Potash mine at the site, claiming that there was not enough time to remove it safely. But scientists and invitation groups are strongly opposed, for fear that chemicals will leak in the water supply in the upper groundwater layer.
