The survivors remember the moment the bridge collapses

The survivors of a bridge in the state of Gojarat in India said on Wednesday who killed at least 15 people that they initially believed that it was an explosion or an earthquake.

The cause of the collapse must still be verified, and the investigations are underway according to the officials of the state government.

Anorbhai, who was driving a car that had other passengers, was on the bridge on Wednesday morning when he heard a crack in the ears – a portion of the bridge behind him collapsed to the Mahsagar River, and took some vehicles with him.

“There was a big explosion and part of the bridge that collapsed behind us. Our truck started rolling back, so we jumped quickly,” he told BBC Gujarati.

The 40 -year -old bridge connected the Fadodara area in the middle of Gojarat and usually witnessed a lot of traffic.

The exciting images after the collapse showed a truck that swings seriously from the broken bridge edge – later moved to safety. But other vehicles, including trucks, cars and tutuk, fell into the water.

At least four people are still missing and ongoing search operations.

“Our priority is to quickly verify the region and recover both bodies and any survivors,” said Surndar Singh, an official with a response to national disasters.

Sonalben Padeiyar was the only survivor among her family members after the car she was traveling in the river.

Ravibhai, who lives in the region, told the BBC Gujarati that the bridge often shakes when heavy vehicles travel.

Abhesinh Parmar, head of the local council from a village near the bridge, said she was in a “dilapidated” condition and “she had drilling everywhere.”

“Bars can be seen out of the structure. We complained several times, but no action has been taken,” he said.

Rushkesh Patel, the official spokesman for the Gojarat Government, denied that the bridge was searched and fixed at regular intervals.

“Recently, Prime Minister Popndra Patel agreed to dismantle the current bridge and build a new bridge. We have been appointed to issue a tender soon,” he said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, from Gojarat, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and announced compensation.

The collapse of Wednesday is among a series of fatal incidents associated with aging and public infrastructure that has been mainly maintained in India.
