Ethiopia has finished building Mega-DAM, says Abi Ahmed

Ethiopia says it has completed the construction of Mega officers on the Blue Nile, which has long been a source of tension with Egypt and Sudan.

The dam was launched in 2011 with a budget of $ 4 billion (2.9 billion pounds), the largest electricity factory in Africa, and a major source of pride for Ethiopians.

Ethiopia believes that the dam is vital to meet the energy needs, but Egypt and Sudan see that it threatens the water supply from the Nile.

In a statement announcing the completion of the project, Prime Minister Abi Ahmed sought to reassure his neighbors. “For our neighbors in the direction of the river course – Egypt and Sudan – our message is clear: the Renaissance Dam is not a threat, but a common opportunity,” he said.

US President Donald Trump said in 2020 that Egypt threatened to “bomb” the dam – officially known as the Green Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

In a reconciliation step, my father said that both Egypt and Sudan will be invited to its official opening in September.

“We believe in joint progress, energy sharing, and common water,” he said.

The President of Egypt, Abd al -Fahia al -Sisi and the military leader, met Sudan, Abd al -Fah al -Fath, earlier this week and “stressed their rejection of any unilateral measures in the Blue Nile Basin,” according to the reports of the news agency.

More than one mile and a height of 145 meters, the dam is on the tributaries of the Blue Nile in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, where 85 % of the Nile water flows.

Ethiopia wants to produce the electricity that affects the need, because the majority of its population – about 60 % – do not have supplies.

Egypt depends on the Nile River almost all its fresh water, and it fears that the flow of water will be disrupted.

He has argued that a decrease of only 2 % in the amount of water he gets from the Nile can lead to a loss of 200,000 acres of irrigated lands.

Sudan also relies heavily on water from the Nile, and shares Egypt’s fears.

Abi said that Ethiopia “is ready to participate in a constructive manner” with the two countries.

However, previous talks failed to solve differences.
