A victim’s family lawyer said on Monday that Brian Cohperger agreed to acknowledge guilty to kill four students of Idahu University as part of a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty.
Shannon Gray, a lawyer representing the Kylie Gonclago family, confirmed that the prosecutors informed the families of the deal by email and the message earlier in the day, and that his clients were annoyed.
“We are angry at the state of Idaho,” wrote the Gonclago family at a Facebook post. “They failed in us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected.”
Gray said that a change in the guilt declaration session was appointed for Wednesday, but the families asked the prosecutors to delay them to give them more time to travel to Boys. Kohberger’s trial for August was appointed.
Cohbarger, 30, was accused of the death of the Gonquelvis, Ethan Chaphein, Xana Kernodle and Madison Magen at a rented house near the campus in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022. The autopsy showed that the four were all asleep when they were attacked, and some of them had defensive injuries and each stabbed several times.
Cuperger, a graduate student student at Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania after weeks of killings. Investigators said they match their DNA with the genetic materials that recovered from the sheath of a knife at the crime scene.
In a court file, his lawyers said that Cuperger was a long distance while the four were killed.
The killings rocked the small agricultural community, which includes about 25,000 people, which has not been a murder for about five years. The trial was transferred from the northern Idahu countryside to Boys after the defense expressed fears that Cuperger was unable to obtain a fair trial in the province, where killings took place.
In a letter to the families, obtained by ABC News, the prosecutors said that Kohberger’s lawyer had contacted them to obtain the approval deal. Prosecutors said they met the family members who were available last week before deciding to make the Kohberger offer.
“This decision is our sincere attempt to search for justice for your family,” the letter said. “This agreement guarantees the defendant’s conviction, and will spend the rest of his life in prison, and he will not be able to put you and other families through uncertainty for post -condemnation decades and appeal.
In Idaho, judges may reject guilt agreements, although these moves are rare. If the judge rejects the approval agreement, the defendant is allowed to withdraw guilt.
Earlier in the past, the Pennsylvania judge ordered that the defense lawyer must request three persons by defense lawyer to Idahu to appear before the Kohabger trial.
Defense call notes were granted in relation to the boxing coach who knew Cuperger as a teenager, childhood acquaintances in Cuperger and a third man whose importance has not been explained.
It has been a large number of lawyers, investigators, and others to speak publicly about the investigation or trial.
