The government to make anti -lock brake systems must be all new wheels from January

In an important step towards improving road safety, the Ministry of Land Transport and highways is preparing to make anti-lock brake systems (ABS) mandatory for all newly-made wheels-including motorcycles, motorcycles and bicycles-starting from January next year, regardless of the engine size.

In addition, the ministry is preparing to impose a base that requires all manufacturers and wheel agents to provide helmets of Indian standards (BIS) with each new vehicle. Currently, only one helmet is assigned.

Government officials say these initiatives are necessary in treating deaths on the worrying roads in India, especially among the two wheels, who represent approximately 44 percent of all deaths on the roads. A large part of these deaths is associated with severe head injuries due to the lack of protection of the appropriate head.

“At the present time, ABS is only mandatory on bikes that exceed 125 cm, which means that approximately 40 percent of the wheels on the road lack this life -saving feature,” said a senior official in the Ministry of Transport. “Given that most of these vehicles can travel at speeds of more than 70 km/h, it is necessary to ensure that there are better braking systems to prevent slipping and collision.”

ABS is designed to prevent wheel locks during arranging braking situations, providing better stability for cars and shorter-decisive distances on wet or uneven roads. Studies indicate that ABS can reduce accident risk by 35-45 percent.

The new rules are expected to be notified in the coming days and will only apply in two new wheels produced from January 2026 onwards.

On a double -letter delegation, the official added that this step aims to enhance the safest passenger habits and ensure the protection of both contestants and Pillaion passengers. The official said: “Providing two credit helmets will enhance the culture of using standard safety equipment, not only for the driver but also for the participating participants.”
