For more than three decades, the familiar refrain from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: Iran is about to develop nuclear weapons.

Since 1992, when Netanyahu addressed the Church of Israel as a deputy, he has been constantly claimed that Tehran was just years away from obtaining a nuclear bomb. “Within three to five years, we can assume that Iran will become independent of its ability to develop and produce a nuclear bomb,” announced at that time. The prediction was repeated later in his book in 1995, fighting terrorism.

The feeling of imminent threat has been repeatedly formed Netanyahu’s association with US officials. In 2002, he appeared in front of the American Congress Committee, called for an invasion of Iraq and suggested that both Iraq and Iran are racing to obtain nuclear weapons. Three years later, at the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu issued a cartoon for a bomb to clarify his allegations that Iran was closer to ever to the nuclear threshold. He said in 2012: “By the next spring, at most by next summer … they will have ended the average enrichment and move to the final stage.”

Now, more than 30 years after its first warning, Israel has made attacks against Iran while Netanyahu asserts that the threat is still sooner. “If it does not stop, Iran can produce a nuclear weapon in a very short time,” he said recently, indicating that the schedule may be months, and even weeks.

These assurances continue despite the statements of the American director of national intelligence earlier this year, saying that Iran was not building a nuclear weapon.

For Netanyahu, the message has rarely changed decades – a warning that appears to exceed intelligence assessments and diplomatic developments.
