WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The factory production in May was barely increased in May, when an increase in cars and aircraft was partially compensated by weakness elsewhere, and expectations for manufacturing remained immersed in definitions.
The Federal Reserve said on Tuesday that manufacturing production increased by 0.1 % last month after a 0.5 % revised decrease in April. Reuters economists expected 0.2 % production after a 0.4 % decrease was reported previously. Factory production increased by 0.5 % year on an annual basis in May.
The changing definition policy of President Donald Trump constitutes a great opposite wind, which represents 10.2 % of the economy and depends greatly on imported raw materials.
Trump has recently doubled steel and aluminum duties to 50 % of 25 %. The group of tariffs includes 25 % tax on cars and spare parts.
Trump has defended the duties as necessary to revive an American industrial base that has been mutating for a long time, but economists say it cannot be accomplished in a short period of time, noting the high costs of production and employment as is the case in challenges.
Car and parts of the parts accelerate 4.9 % last month after a decrease of 2.3 % in April. Various airline and transportation production increased by 1.1 %. But the removal of fabricated metal products, machines and non -metal metal products, all of which have deployed at least 1.0 %.
The production of durable manufacturing increased by 0.4 %. Unintended manufacturing production decreased by 0.2 %, and decreased due to a decrease in printing and support, oil and coal, as well as food, drinks and tobacco.
The production of unintegrated consumer goods decreased by 0.8 % amid 3.2 % diving in non -consumer energy.
The mining output increased by 0.1 % after a decrease of 0.3 % in the previous month. Facilities production decreased by 2.9 %, with a decrease in 3.6 % in electrical facilities, more than a 2.7 % increase in the output of natural gas facilities. This was followed by an increase of 4.9 % in April.
The total industrial production decreased by 0.2 % after getting 0.1 % in April. It increased by 0.6 % year on an annual basis in May.
The use of capacity for the industrial sector, a measure of how to use the full companies for its resources, decreased to 77.4 % of 77.7 % in April. It is 2.2 Celsius less than an average of 1972-2024. The operating rate of the manufacturing sector has not changed by 76.7 %. It is 1.5 Celsius less than average in the long run.
