The number of discounts in the jobs announced in the first five months of 2025 increased by 80 % of the same period in the previous year, according to a new report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Employers have announced approximately 696,000 job cuts until May. In 2024, this number was slightly more than 385,000. According to the report, the job cuts are only 65,000 from the match in 2024.

“The customs tariff, the discounts in financing, consumer spending, and comprehensive economic pessimism at great pressure on the workforce of the companies,” said Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of the Callerger, Gray & Christmas. The report also referred to economic and market conditions as a reason for increasing workers’ demobilization. In addition, the report said that the retail job cuts closed 76,000 for this year, which represents the second highest job of job discounts behind the federal government, and constituted a huge increase of 274 % over the course of 2024.

Forest retailers known in stores, such as JCPENNEY and MACY’s Store, announced in 2025. Forever 21, a fashion retail store, announced the closure of hundreds of stores while they were charged with their business, due primarily to a competition from Shein and TEMU. The Rite-Aid, Walgrens and Party City also announced a closure.

The retail company, Joann, announced in February that it will close all its stores after submitting the second bankruptcy within one year. The store, famous for a variety of fabrics, which managed more than 800 locations in the United States all its remaining stores, after the latest bankruptcy, is closed by the end of May.
