Mark Retti is determined to give Donald Trump a victory at the upcoming NATO summit.
The coalition Secretary -General wants to avoid scenes in 2016 when the US President, while, during his first term, had benefited from European allies for not spending enough to defend and benefit from the US taxpayer.
Trump sees relationships, even on the basis of mass security, such as transactions.
Thus, in a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, Rutte suggested that NATO members spend 5 % of GDP (GDP) on defense – a matter of publicly called Trump.
The increase – which would exceed the current goal of NATO members in spending 2 % of GDP – is a great demand for many European countries.
Some people may ask whether such a deal will be related to Russia’s appearance, or – at least in part – designed to please the president.
Rutte level will reduce the burden a little. It will require countries to increase basic defensive spending to 3.5 % of GDP, while the remaining 1.5 % will consist of “defense related expenses”.
It is a sufficient mysterious term that allows them to some waving room. Root said it could include infrastructure and industry costs.
He said that the United States will also score the new goal – although Washington is already spending 3.4 % on the defense, will be relatively painless.
The real test is not commitment, but if it is delivered. Leaders who are expected to reach an agreement in The Hague have long ended at a time when their countries are expected to meet the new goal.
There is still any schedule, but it is likely to be about 10 years. There is no real punishment that NATO can impose on the faltering. A handful of nations still has to meet the target group 2 % more than a decade.
At a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, Roti – who was previously running one of these countries that did not meet the target by 2 % – was asked whether he could make sure that the two countries will meet the commitment over time.
He only said that he has a “cunning plan” to hold political leaders, “that the countries will adhere to annual plans that show the increase every year to ensure that you reach the new goal of 5 %.”
This would prevent the “hockey stick” to draw a graph to spend time over time, as it suddenly wanders in the end.
Roti will visit the United Kingdom next week to meet with Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer. The NATO leader’s commitment to spending on the current defense plans of the UK Prime Minister, under which the United Kingdom spends 2.5 % of its gross domestic product by 2027, with an “ambition” to raise this to 3 % in the next parliament.
On Thursday, US Defense Minister Beit Higseth claimed that countries including France, Germany and Baltic and Northern countries, Poland, Greece and Hungary have already committed to a 5 % pledge.
He refused to nominate countries that have not yet been committed, but he said he was sure that the UK “will arrive there.”
“We think everyone will get there, and we are really doing. It is important to do that. It is important for the United Kingdom to reach there,” said Higseth.
