A naval court in Greece accused 17 coastal guards on the harshest migratory boat disaster in the Mediterranean.
Up to 650 people were afraid of drowning when a crowded Adriana hunting pot was sank near Pelos, off the Greek coast, in the early hours of June 14, 2023.
The survivors later told the BBC that the Greek coast guards caused their boat to turn a failed attempt to pull it and then silence the witnesses.
“It took only two years until these charges come, although many people saw what happened,” said one of the survivors, a Syrian man who we called Ahmed on Monday.
Coast Coast
The Greek authorities have always denied claims against them.
The Deputy Prosecutor of the Piraeus Naval Court found that 17 of the Hellenic Coast Guard should face criminal charges.
Among them are the captain of the coastal ship, LS-920, who was charged with “causing the wreckage of the ship”, which leads to the death of “at least 82 people.”
This corresponds to the number of bodies that have been recovered, although it believes up to 500 additional drowning, including women and children who were all less than the deck.
The disaster occurred in international waters – but inside the Greek rescue area.
He is the head of the Coast Guard at the time and the supervisor of the National Coordination and Rescue Coordination Center in Piraeus is among the four officials accused of “endangering others.”
The LS-920 team captain is accused of “dangerous intervention in maritime transport” in addition to “not providing assistance” to the migrant boat.
The ship’s crew is charged with “simple collusion” in all the actions that the captain is claimed.
Doubts at the expense of Greek officials
The Coast Guard was watching Adriana for 15 hours before it was sank.
Libya has left Italy with an estimated 750 people on board. Only 104 of them are known to have survived.
The disaster day has been investigated, and the series of results we reached indicated serious doubt in the official Greek version of the events.
Within a week, We got shipping data Who challenged the claim was not the migrant boat in trouble and therefore did not need to be saved.
A month later, the survivors told us The Coast Guard sank their boat in a catastrophic effort To pull it and then witnessed the commitment of silence.
Last year, A case against nine Egyptians was castAmid allegations that they are a scapegoat by the Greek authorities.
Earlier this year, Sound recordings appeared This challenged the official Greek version of the events.
Syrian survivors feel “justified”
We met for the first time the Syrian refugees, whom we called Ahmed and Moses to protect their identities, after a month of the disaster.
They said they paid $ 4,500 (3,480 pounds) for a boat site.
Ahmed Al -Asghar’s brother was also on board the plane and did not survive.
It described the mission of the moment it caused – the Greek coast guards in the sinking of their boat.
“They tied a rope from the left,” he said. “Everyone moved to the right side of our boat to balance it. The Greek ship quickly moved, causing the heart of our boat. They continued to drag it for a great distance.”
Men claimed that once on the ground, in the port of Caquama, the Coast Guard asked the survivors “silence” when they started talking about how the Greek authorities caused the disaster.
Ahmed said: “When the people answered by saying that the Greek Coast Guard was the reason, the official asked the translator interrogation to tell criminals to stop talking.”
He said that the officials shouted: “I have survived.
Today, Ahmed – who now lives in Germany – said he felt the charges of charges.
“I am very happy because they are finally accountable for everything they committed, but even I see them in prison, nothing has been done yet,” he said.
“Frankly, the Greek legal system is very reliable.”
The legal team of the victims is welcome
The joint legal team, which represents the survivors and victims of the disaster, said that the decision to follow up the case against the 17 coast was a big step forward towards justice.
In a statement, he said: “After about two years of the wreck of the Pylos ship, the prosecution and referral to the main investigation of the criminal of 17 members of the Coast Guard, including senior officials in its leadership, constitute great and calm development in the framework of justifying victims and providing justice.”
It is understood that the 17 men who are now accused will be interrogated in the coming weeks by the Deputy Prosecutor of the Pyeus Naval Court.
The court will then decide whether to send it to a complete trial or refuse the charges.
It is not immediately the punishment that the coast guards can receive if convicted.
Earlier, Greece BBC told the Coast Guard to completely respect human rights and save more than 250,000 people at sea in the past decade.
