Chinese technology giant Xiaomi CEO Lee John in Waypo Post said on Monday that at least 50 billion yuan (6.9 billion dollars) over the next ten years to develop its own chips.
It is the latest step by a Chinese company that multiplies local technology amid the continuous trade war between the United States and China, which has witnessed that Washington has cut access to some retired companies in the second largest economy in the world.
A spokesman for Xiaomi confirmed that the 50 billion yuan investment starts from 2025. Lei added that the company is looking to make a splash in an event on Thursday, when it raises the winding from Xring O1-the so-called segment that will operate the smartphone coming from Xiaomi.
Xring O1 depends on the manufacture of 3 nm, one of the most advanced in the market. For comparison, A18 Pro chips from Apple are designed within iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max smartphones on the same process.
The operating system, or SOC, is a type of semiconductor that contains different ingredients that help operate a device, such as a smartphone. This can include parts such as memory and wireless communication.
To date, the United States Qualcomm The main supplier of SOCS for the leading smartphones in Xiaomi was through the Snapdragon semiconductors.
On Thursday, Xiaomi is expected to launch a new smartphone and tablet computers, as well as an electric car. It is not clear what devices will contain the new Xring O1.
Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, told CNBC on Monday that it is not expected that Xiaomi’s last step will affect his business.
“We are still a strategic resource for Xiaomi chips, and most importantly, I think Qualcomm Snapdragon chips are used in the pioneering Xiaomi and will continue to be used in the pioneering Xiaomi.”

A few smart phone companies worldwide designing their SOCS, given the account and difficulty of the process. appleSamsung and Huawei are among the few players who launched their own chips. Many other sellers rely on products from companies such as Qualcomm and Mediaatek.
But a great advantage for self -designed chips is the ability to integrate devices and programs closely to provide a different experience of competitors.
Xring O1 is not the first Sociaomi, after it released the S1 S1 in 2017. Lei said, due to various reasons and setbacks, the research and the development of Socies were suspended. Xiaomi has launched other types of semiconductors such as those to improve management or photography, but Xring O1 would return to the company’s return to the primary smartphone component.
