A supportive candidate for the European Union in the forefront in the first round of Poland, the presidential vote

RFAł TRZASKOWSKI was tightly topped by the first round of Poland’s presidential elections on Sunday, putting the European Union’s supportive candidate on an external tour with a right -wing competitor that could open the agenda of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Exit polls indicate that TRZASKOWSKI, mayor of Warsaw and the candidate for the TUSK ruling civil platform party, was to secure 30.8 percent of the votes, before opposition candidate Carole Noruki by 29.1 percent.

The exit survey was more strict than expected, and it was a major blow to the liberal Tricaskowski, which topped opinion polls throughout the campaign and held 5 points over Noruki until Sunday. The two will qualify to vote in the second round on June 1.

“I am very happy because I won the first round, but there is a lot of work that awaits us,” said Trzaskowski.

Trzaskowski faces the challenge of mobilizing progressive voters in the second round, especially among women who played a fundamental role in the 2023 parliamentary Tusk winning, when the participation rate reached 74 percent. Some of these voters expressed his frustration due to the government’s failure to cancel the almost complete abortion ban imposed by the previous PIS administration, amid internal differences within the TUSK alliance.
