Sugar production in India for the continuous season of 2024-25 has reached 257.44 tons until May 15, 2025, according to the latest data issued by the ISMA and the factory (ISMA). Currently, two sugar manufacturers are still working in Tamil Nadu, where the main crack season is still ongoing.
In an attempt to further strengthen production, many mills in the south of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are expected to resume operations during the Special Crafts season from July to September 2025. Historically, this overwhelming window is 4 to 5 tons of tons on national sugar product.
With this additional size, ISMA is estimated at the total sugar production for the 2024-25 season to close in 261 to 262 tons. The season started with an opening stock of 80 tons. In the domestic consumption expected from 280 tons of cobs and export sizes of up to 9 tons of cde, the closing stocks are likely to stand on 52-53 comfortable tons, ensuring a stable offer for local demand.
One of the most prominent events in this season was to convert sugar to the production of ethanol – part of the government’s pushing for cleaner energy. As of April 30, 27 tons of sugar has already been re -directed to produce ethanol, as it is expected to be transferred from 6 to 7 tons of tons.
In the future, the 2025-26 sugar season appears promising, with the support of strong cane cultivation trends across the main productive states. In Maharashtra and Carnataka, the southern western monsoon conditions in 2024 led to significant improvements in sugar cane seed. This paves the stage for the crushing season in a timely and strong time starting in October 2025.
Meanwhile, in the state of Uttar Pradesh and other parts of northern India, various replacement initiatives are gaining traction, which can be translated into higher cane revenues and better sugar recovery rates. The strengthening of this optimism is expectations from both the Meteorological Department of India (IMD) and SkyMet, which expects natural monsoon winds in 2025 – a decisive factor for agricultural production.
