At least seven people died, and the main roads were cut after heavy rains to the floods in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.
The spokesman for the regional administration, Abdinasir Hersi Edel, said on Saturday that rescue efforts are continuing.
He said: “The number of deaths could rise because the rains were heavy and lasted for several hours, which caused the collapse of nine houses across different neighborhoods, and at least six main roads suffering from severe damage.”
Somalia has suffered in the past from severe climate shocks, including the long dry seasons that caused dryness and heavy rains, which led to floods.
On Friday, rain lasted for about eight hours, leaving high waist water in the neighborhoods, where some residents were trapped and others had to move to a higher land.
One of the residents, Mohamed Hassan, told the Associated Press news that some elderly people are still trapped.
He said: “We spent the night on the roofs of the houses, we shivered from the cold, and I did not eat breakfast.”
The flood water also affected the main infrastructure, stopping public transport and temporarily disrupting operations at the main Aden Airport. Officials later confirmed the resumption of flights.
Somalia Disaster Management Agency did not issue a lack of official death, but said the evaluation was underway to determine the extent of damage.
The country’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in the country said in a statement on Saturday that “a large amount of rain, which exceeds 115 mm, was registered in more than 8 consecutive hours,” and warned against flash floods in other areas outside the capital.
