China’s exports increased in April, even as shipments dropped to the United States, where companies were carrying the heavy US tariff that kicks last month. Imports rose declines with the escalating of Beijing motivation.

Exports jumped by 8.1 % last month in US dollars from the previous year, according to the data issued by the Customs Authority on Friday, as they sharply overcame the Reuters reconnaissance estimates by 1.9 %.

Imports fell 0.2 % in April of the previous year, compared to the expectations of economists by a 5.9 % decrease.

Official data showed that the shipments issued in China to the United States decreased more than 21 % in April on an annual basis, while imports decreased by approximately 14 %.

In a memorandum, Zeoy Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, said in a note that the increase in total exports could be partial due to the transition through the third and contracts signed before the announcement of the customs tariff.

Zhang expects trade data gradually weaken in the next few months.

China’s shipments recorded a 12.4 % growth on an annual basis In March, when companies rushed to export goods to avoid high tariffs. However, imports have decreased by more than 4.3 % from the previous year, confirming the Beijing challenge of reviving the local demand.

US President Donald Trump put a tariff of 145 % on all imports from China, prompting it to take revenge on the customs tariff by 125 % on American imports. So far, both sides have sought to distinguish the economic impact of three -numbers by granting exemptions for some critical products.

Raymond Young, chief economist in Greater China at Anz Bank on Thursday, said that the number of container ships from China to the United States decreased significantly at the end of April.

The Chinese government has sought to help exporters to convert sales to the local market, a step that could push the economy to a deeper shrinkage.
