Is Donald Trump’s plan to reopen the Katabrazes as a realism for imprisonment?

US President Donald Trump has multiplied his proposal to reopen and expand Alkatraz, the island of one day in the ice water of San Francisco Gulf.

Alcatraz -known as “The Rock” – decades ago, is now a historical teacher visited by millions of tourists every year.

The US president says he believes that prison can be used to harboring dangerous prisoners, and works as a symbol of law and order in the United States.

But experts say that the renewal of the coordinated imprisonment residues are “unrealistic at all.”

Here is what we know about the plan.

It is located on an island, about 1.25 miles (2 km) from San Francisco, the Catrazing was originally built as a seat retribution, but it was rebuilt in the early twentieth century as a military prison.

In 1934, it was officially transferred to a federal prison – Federal Alacatraz Prison – notorious prisoners of prisoners including gangs Al -Kabouni, Mickey Cohen and George “Kelly A machine gun”, among others.

The prison was among the most famous prison in the United States at the time, and it was considered inevitable due to strong currents and cold temperatures in the Gulf of San Francisco.

This facility was also famous in the 1979 movie, the American CV drama, Escape from Alcatraz, who narrated an escape in a prisoner in 1962 with Clint Eastwood starring Frank Morris leader.

It was also a 1996 movie site, starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, about the former Captain Sas and the Federal Investigation Office that saves the hostages from Alacatraz Island.

According to the Federal Prison Office, BOP, the work was three times more expensive than other federal institutions and eventually closed the public prosecutor Robert Kennedy in 1963.

Al -Jazeera and Al -Jazi is now a museum managed by the National Park Service. He visits more than 1.4 million people every year.

“The Cascarizer is a place where the present past meets,” Christine Lyrtz, President and CEO of Golden Gate National Parks Conservance said in a BBC statement.

She added: “He challenges us to listen, learn, and harass the stories that still constitute our world today.”

Donald Trump is not the first president to reopen the facility as a detention center.

In 1981, Alcatraz was one of 14 sites looked at the Reagan administration, which retains up to 20,000 refugees who fled from Cuba to Florida in the famous “Mariel Pots”.

The site was eventually rejected due to the complete lack of sufficient facilities and its value as a historic tourist site.

As a social position in fact on May 4, Trump first said that he ordered his government to reopen and expand the island’s prison, saying that “a very long America has been afflicted by the chopped criminals, violence and cruisers.”

Shortly after Trump’s comments, news around the world, Justice Ministry spokesman Chad Gilmertin said in a statement that BOP “is working to rebuild and opens the cards to serve as a symbol of law and order.”

But prison experts and historians expressed serious doubts whether the plan is possible.

“To be honest, at first I thought it was a joke,” Hugh Horwitz, who held the position of BOP team manager between May 2018 and August 2019. “It is not realistic that you can fix it. You must tear it and start again.”

Mr. Horwitz referred to a number of problems with the facility, including buildings that “literally collapse”, cells in which “six -feet standing” cannot stand.

“There are no security promotions. There are no cameras. No fence,” he added. “You cannot run the prison.”

“I have two words: water and sewage,” said Julien Babyak, author and Catrazing, who lived there for two children as a child with her father.

She said: “At its peak, all wastewater was thrown to 500 or more people in the Gulf.” “Nowadays, boats should be done. It is not realistic at all. But it embodies everyone’s imagination.”

When the facility was closed in 1963, BOP said it was three times more expensive than any other federal prison – the cost of each bond is $ 10 and $ 13, compared to between $ 3 and $ 5 for other facilities. This was partly because it required food and supplies to be dropped by the boat.

In federal prisons today, the cost of the individual from prisoners ranges between $ 120 and $ 164 – which means that the costs may rise to more than $ 500 per person in a facility like Alcatraz, which can only bear about 340 prisoners at its peak.

“The mind was very expensive to keep a condemnation there,” said John Martini, the historian who spent several years on Alcatraz as a guard in the national park. “Things did not change. But the place has descended.”

“It is basically a shell. Even the concrete has major problems. The garden service has put millions to install it structurally,” he added. “They will need water, electricity, heat and sanitation. Nothing of these jobs.”

Mr. Martini added: “This (Trump’s comments) is just another development in the strange history of Catatraz,” added Mr. Martini.
