The drone attack fired by the semi -military rapid support forces (RSF) a military airport in the city of Port Sudan on Sunday, according to the Sudanese army.

It represents the first time that RSF attacks have reached the city-an effective capital of the Sudan army The government – since the conflict between the warring factions erupted two years ago.

Sudanese army spokesman, Nabil Abdullah, said that RSF launched many “drones” in the city of the East Sea, targeting Othman Digna Air Force Base, “a warehouse of goods and some civil facilities.”

He said that no injuries were reported, but the attack caused “limited damage.” RSF did not comment on the accident.

Sudan fell into a conflict in April 2023 when a conflict erupted on the evil power between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF, a strong paramilitary group, before the planned move to civil rule.

At least 150,000 people who died in the civil war that followed, were forced, as about 12 million people were forced to flee their homes.

The United Nations described the situation in Sudan as the largest and most destructive humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 30 million people to help and Millions who face acute food shortages and famine.

Before the attacks on Sunday, Port Sudan avoided bombing and considered one of the safest places in the nation that destroyed the war.

After SAF lost control of the capital, Khartoum, early in the war, Port Sudan became the actual headquarters of the government led by the military carried by General Abd al -Fattah Birhan.

United Nations agencies have transferred their offices and employees to the coastal city, and hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced there during the war have escaped.

“We were on our way to the plane when we were quickly evacuated and got out of the station,” one of the travelers told AFP on Sunday after the strikes.

Video footage on social media, which has not been independently verified, appears to show an explosion and huge columns of black smoke in the sky.

The airport was closed and all flights were suspended, as a government source told AFP.

For two years, the conflict left the nation divided into competitive areas.

RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo – known as Hemedti – controls most of the vast Darfur region in western Sudan, and parts of the south.

The army -backed government controls east and northern Sudan, including the main red city of Port Sudan.

The Sunday strike is the latest in a series of RSF drone attacks on military and civilian infrastructure in the army -controlled lands. On Saturday, an army source reported a drone attack on Kasala, on the eastern border of Sudan, about 250 miles (400 km) from the nearest RSF.

SAF has regained land spaces in recent months, including Restore control of the presidential palace in Khartoum In March.

The capital was unlikely to be restored as a turning point in the civil war for two years, but although SAF has a momentum currently, it is unlikely that either side will achieve a victory that enables them to rule over the entire Sudan, according to a report issued by the International Crisis Group.

This is the third civil war of Sudan for 70 years, but it is considered worse than others, tearing it into the heart of the country and stiffness of divisions.

After a coup in 2021, a council of Sudan generals – led by the two men ran in the current conflict center.

Al -Bouran was the head of the armed forces in Sudan, and in fact the president of the country, while Hemedti was his deputy and the leader of RSF.

The couple did not agree to the direction in which the country was entering and the proposed move towards civil rule – in particular plans to accommodate the 100,000 RSF in the army.

Tensions between the army and RSF have grown as a deadline for the formation of a civilian government, before the fighting between the two sides began to control the Sudanese state.

International mediator efforts failed and supported both sides by the foreign powers that pole weapons in the country.
