Chile exports a tsunami warning after the earthquake

Chile issued a tsunami warning and said that people should evacuate the coastal areas in the south of the country after a major earthquake.

The warning was issued to the remote Magalnes region on the southern end of the country and parts of the Chilean Southern Pole.

This comes after an earthquake of 7.4 degrees 219 km (136 miles) off the coast of the city of Uchway, in neighboring Argentina, on Friday, according to the geological survey of the United States.

The earthquake was also perceived in USHUAIA, local media reports were reported, and final tremors were reported in the region.

In a post on X, Chilean President Gabriel Borik said: “We call for the evacuation of the coastal line throughout the Magalnes.” He added that all state resources will be provided to deal with any impact.

More than 1700 people have been evacuated to a higher land in the Magalnes area with a population that is scattered so far, including 1,000 from the city of Porto Williams and 500 from Porto Natalis, according to the Chilean Disaster Agency.

Sinabrid added that about 32 people have followed the evacuation procedures in the rules of Antarctica’s research in Chile.

The agency advised the population to “act calmly and follow the instructions of the authorities and response teams.”

The footage published on social media has not yet been verified by the BBC, that people are calmly heading to a higher land in Porto Williams, with sirens in the background.

Local media reported that this is a precaution, as the residents are required to evacuate safe areas of more than 30 meters from sea level.

The American Geological Reception said that the earthquake struck the Drake Corridor between Cape Horn and the rescue of Antarctica at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).
