I was trying to do some things differently in 2025.

Specifically, moving about moments or things that make me uncomfortable.

(I do not mean “the times I am in a physical danger,” of course).

But instead, I will run about The things that my mind tells me, “This is uncomfortable, I don’t like this, avoid it at any cost.”

Email I am afraid to open. The conversation I am afraid to do. The question I am afraid to ask. The ability to be alone with my thoughts.

When I reach my phone or the Netflix control device or PlayStation to avoid feeling bored, uncomfortable, sad or guilty …

I try to build some discipline to stop first.

Not to avoid or exchange attention or entertain what is really happening.

To not go out or escape, Monte Python style.

If I have the courage to sit there and really ask the question, “Why does this make me feel uncomfortable?” There are valuable lessons that must be learned.

You tend to be upset

The author Pima Chaudhron puts the following in her book When things collapse:

“We consider discomfort in any way as bad news.

… feelings such as disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear.

Instead of being bad news, this is in fact very clear moments, we teach us where we live

These things can be incredible teachers if we give ourselves a space for learning.

But this is the question in 2025:

Thanks to the Internet, our phones and our delivery on the same day, we can spend every minute every day hiding from almost every uncomfortable feeling in our lives. We never have to feel bored, never have to feel “bad”, and we never have to treat the elephant in the room.

We can only scroll, click, click or separate to avoid any “bad” feelings.

We can hide from them with endless entertainment and comfort (even if we are prevented from getting what we really want).

Of course, these bad feelings do not disappear – they are still there, and the things we avoid will eventually need to deal with them.

When I try to hide from discomfort, I know I don’t really avoid it. I do not keep it besieged.

These feelings are trying to teach us!

Many feelings of discomfort scream to teach us something if we can reformulate what we feel about them.
