An unusual maintenance payment in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has sparked widespread attention after a 37-year-old man submitted Rs 80,000 in coins to the family court as part of an interim maintenance payment for his estranged wife.
The Additional Family Court ordered the man, a taxi driver and owner, to pay Rs 2 lakh as maintenance. On Wednesday, he arrived with two white bags filled with Rs 2 and Rs 1 coins, contributing Rs 80,000 to the total amount owed. A video of him carrying the bags out of court and loading them into a car has since gone viral on social media.
After receiving the amount in coins, the presiding judge ordered the man to exchange the amount for notes, citing the futility of handling such a large amount of coins.
On Thursday, the man returned with notes worth Rs 80,000, in compliance with court instructions. The judge also reminded him to settle the remaining amount of Rs 1.2 lakh of interim maintenance as soon as possible.
This unusual incident mirrors a recent case in Bengaluru involving tech professional Atul Subhash. The 34-year-old executive tragically ended his life, leaving behind a detailed 24-page memo and an 80-minute video.
In these accusations, he accused his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family of harassment and blackmail, claiming that they demanded large sums of money to resolve legal disputes. After his death, Singhania and her family were arrested on charges of abetment to suicide.
