The local ruler’s office told Reuters, without confirming the nationalities of the victims, that six foreigners were killed on Thursday when a tourist submarine sank in the Horgada resort in Egypt.
The Russian consulate in Horgada said the submarine, named “Cinda”, has 45 Russian tourists on board, as well as crew members.
The consulate said that four people died, but they did not specify whether they were Russian. Two municipal officials told Associated Press that nine others were injured.
The consulate said: “According to the initial data, most of the people on board were rescued and transferred to their hotels and hospitals in Hergada,” the consulate said.
The consulate added that the fate of many tourists is still clarified.
Emergency crews managed to save 29 people, according to a statement issued by the Red Sea Governorate.
It was not immediately evident why the submarine sank.
The Red Sea, which is famous for coral reefs and marine life, is a major center for the tourism industry in Egypt, which plays an important role in the country’s economy. But many tourism companies have stopped or limited to the Red Sea due to the risks of conflict in the region.
In November, a Tourist boat coup Qaying the Red Sea coast in Egypt, killing four people.
