An official said an earthquake of 6.1 degrees struck in the northwestern Balikiser province in Türkiye on Sunday, causing the collapse of about ten buildings. At least two people were held in the wreckage of a rivers.
The earthquake, with the earthquake center in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that felt about 200 km away in Istanbul, a city of more than 16 million people.
The mayor of Siederji Sirkan Sak Habartork had been rescued that four people were rescued from a collapsed building in the city while rescuers were trying to reach two other people from the temple.
He said that many houses also collapsed in the nearby village of Gulkok. The minaret also landed from a mosque in the village.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Agency in Türkiye said the earthquake was followed by many wireless tremors, including one measurement of 4.6, and urged citizens not to enter the damaged buildings.
Türkiye sits on top of the main rift lines and earthquakes.
In 2023, an earthquake of 7.8 was killed by more than 53,000 people in Türkiye and destroyed or harmed hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southeast and southeast provinces. Other people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.
