Netflix has made a name for itself in the world of cinema, releasing original films that have dominated industry award shows such as Oscars and Golden Globe. Broadcast giant Received 18 nominations to Oscars 2024Two of them are for the sports drama Naiad. Its new deal with Sony brings theatrical releases like Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Godzilla Minus One to streaming, along with premium originals like the critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-nominated Emilia Pérez, starring Selena Gomez, Carla Sofia Gascón and Zoe. Saldaña.

Set in 1945, the story revolves around Koichi Shikishima, a young pilot dealing with PTSD in the post-World War II era. After surviving a confrontation with Godzilla, he and others realize that the kaiju are preparing to attack Tokyo. The Sony film is available to stream on Netflix now.

The award-winning film, Snow Society, is based on true events and adapted from the book of the same name. In 1972, a Uruguayan rugby team boarded a plane to Chile for a match. The plane crashed in the Andes, leaving survivors suffering injuries, illness, cold temperatures, and death. Not everyone makes it, and those who face death make painful choices to live.

The Greatest Night in Pop (2024)

If you weren’t there at the time, it’s hard to explain how big We Are the World was. Recorded by a host of famous musicians – quickly coming together on the night of the American Music Awards in 1985 – the charity single benefiting victims of the Ethiopian famine sold more than 20 million copies and included the likes of Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. A standalone sequel to the 2019 hit film Knives Out, Glass Onion follows Detective Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) mission to uncover a mysterious death, after tech billionaire Miles Bronn (Edward Norton) invites his friends to his private Greek island. The film features fun plot twists, light humor and isolated characters played by an all-star cast.

Leave the World Behind (2023)

An unsettling psychological thriller that leaves the world behind you, chronicling the strange events that arise during a family’s elopement in a luxury rented house. A power outage renders their phones, TVs, and other electronic devices useless, and two strangers show up at the door. TikTok has been filled with clips and analysis of this end-of-the-world movie, as people ponder the potential “hidden messages” and real-life parallels. Check it out and see what you make of it.

Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Carla Sofía Gascón star in Emilia Perez’s film, a film that received 10 Golden Globe nominations this year, including Best Picture, Best Director and nods for all three lead actors. In the film, Gascón plays Emilia, a Mexican cartel leader who hires a lawyer named Rita (Saldaña) to help fake her death so Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self. The musical crime comedy that defies all classifications was also named one of the 10 best films of 2024 by the AFI.

This animated drama, based on the graphic novel of the same name, is set in a future medieval world, where a knight (Riz Ahmed) is accused of a crime. A shape-shifting teenager named Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) – who has been trained to destroy him – may be his only hope of proving his innocence.

This biographical film tells the story of two sisters, Yusra (Natalie Issa) and Sarah Mardini (Manal Issa), who fled war-torn Syria. Amidst all the conflicts and turmoil, Yousra works to achieve her dream of swimming in the Olympics. It is a moving novel about hope and survival.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

A World War I drama based on the classic novel of the same name, this epic depicts the horrors of war through the eyes of 17-year-old German soldier Paul Böhmer (Felix Kammerer). At first, Boomer is eager to join the army – despite his parents’ wishes – but he receives a violent wake-up call. All Quiet on the Western Front was a dominant force at the 95th Annual Academy Awards, being nominated for nine Academy Awards and ultimately taking home four, including Best International Feature Film.

Annette Bening and Jodie Foster both received Academy Award nominations (for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) for their roles in Nyad, the Netflix original film about marathon swimmer Diana Nyad and her devoted coach Bonnie Stoll. The remarkable true story is not a complete biography but a chapter in Nyad’s successful life when, at the age of 60, Nyad became obsessed with completing a grueling, nearly impossible 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Determined to become the first person to finish swimming without a shark cage, the film is a story of Nyad’s determination, fueled by the support of those close to her.

The film has been in the top 10 on Netflix for weeks thanks to the amazing performances from the film’s cast and a truly tense game of cat and mouse between a mysterious stranger (Batman) who blackmails Egerton’s character into letting a dangerous bag into the city. Escape, putting hundreds of lives in danger.

Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse (2023)

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wasn’t just one of the best animated films of 2023, it was one of the best films of the year. The animated superhero film brings together different versions of Peter Parker/Spider-Man across time and space, using a portal to connect their worlds as they battle the supervillain known as The Spot. Packed with dozens of famous voices, from Shameik Moore to Jason Schwartzman and Hailee Steinfeld, the film is the first half of an epic saga that will conclude with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which may not arrive until 2027.
