Ten people were killed and 30 others were injured after a car plowed into a crowd of people on New Orleans and Bourbon streets on Wednesday, according to the city’s emergency preparedness agency NOLA Ready.

New Orleans Police said earlier that they were responding to an accident that resulted in a large number of casualties, including deaths. NOLA Ready advised people to stay away from the area.

Local media said that the hit-and-run accident occurred while a large crowd was gathering to celebrate the New Year in the city’s French Quarter, at around 3:15 a.m. local time.

CBS quoted eyewitnesses as saying that a truck rammed into the crowd at high speed, then the driver got out and started shooting, while the police returned fire.

More to come.
